Bin It! – Don’t Block It!

Posted: Tue, 07 Nov 2017 18:52 by Trevor Davies

A Message from Thames Water – the utility responsible for the sewerage network and sewage treatment works (STW) within the catchment of Croughton.

Thames Water is currently experiencing problems with blockages within the network and pumps being blocked at the STW.

The sewerage system was only designed to take "poo, pee, paper" (toilet only) and wastewater.

1. Running the hot tap and pouring washing up liquid down the sink won't prevent fats or oils from blocking your pipes.

2. Wet wipes do not break down in the loo as they are made of plastic. Even if they say 'flushable' they should never go down the toilet.

3. Household pipes are only 10cm in diameter.

To keep your pipes free of blockages and the risk of flooding:

1. Use containers to capture cooled cooking fat and left over oil, then dispose of it in the bin.

2. Scrape your plates of food and fat before washing up or loading into the dishwasher.

3. Keep a bin in the bathroom for disposing of anything that is not designed to be flushed down the toilet.
